Open-Tread Stair Railings
Modern interior stairs with no risers benefit hugely from glass — light passes through the entire staircase and the architecture stays visible.
- Standoff mount
- 10mm or 12mm tempered
- Custom angled cuts

Frameless and semi-frameless glass railings for interior stairs, mezzanines, decks, balconies and commercial mezzanines across the Greater Toronto Area. 10mm and 12mm tempered; laminated on request. Five-year warranty.
Glass railings let light, sightlines, and architecture pass through where solid balusters would interrupt them. From open-tread interior stairs to lakefront balconies, the goal is the same — a barrier that disappears.
We install OBC-compliant 10mm and 12mm tempered glass on interior and exterior railing jobs, mounted on stainless steel standoffs, full base shoes, or embedded shoes depending on the design. Laminated glass is available on request. Every installation meets or exceeds Ontario Building Code Standards.
Six places we install glass railings most often — from open-tread stairs in custom builds to oceanfront balconies in Burlington.
Modern interior stairs with no risers benefit hugely from glass — light passes through the entire staircase and the architecture stays visible.
Frameless glass on second-floor mezzanines and overlooks preserves the open-plan feel without a tall wall blocking sightlines.
Exterior tempered glass (laminated available on request) with marine-grade stainless hardware. Survives Canadian winters with no yellowing or delamination.
Highest-spec exterior installs — wind-loaded, salt-exposed, view-defining. We engineer these with structural letters when required.
Single-panel guards in front of full-height windows or doors. Adds light and view without the depth of a full balcony.
Office and retail mezzanines, viewing platforms, atriums. Project-managed from drawing to OBC sign-off.
Every railing we install is built to current Ontario Building Code standards for residential and commercial use. Engineering letters available on request.

Yes. Glass guards are explicitly permitted under the Ontario Building Code (Part 9, Section 9.8) for residential applications provided they meet height, structural load, and glass specifications. We install OBC-compliant 10mm and 12mm tempered glass for exterior railings, with structural standoffs or full base shoes appropriate to the location. Laminated glass is available on request for applications where post-breakage glass containment is required. Engineering letters are available on commercial and multi-unit residential projects on request.
Most residential glass railing installations in Ontario do not require a standalone building permit — they fall under the scope of the existing structure or renovation permit. If you are adding a railing to an existing deck as a separate project, or if your municipality requires permit drawings for guard installations, a permit may apply. We advise on permit requirements specific to your city and project during the free measure appointment.
Standard interior glass railings in Toronto use 10mm fully tempered glass, which meets Ontario Building Code Part 9, Section 9.8 requirements for most residential applications. 12mm tempered glass is available for larger panel spans, exterior high-wind locations, or clients who prefer a heavier feel. 12mm laminated glass is available on request where post-breakage glass containment is a priority. Book a free measure and we will specify the right glass for your project.
There are three primary mount styles we install across the GTA: stainless steel standoffs (point-fixed through the glass — modern and minimal), full base shoe (a continuous aluminium channel along the bottom edge, hides hardware completely), and embedded shoe (recessed into the floor for a true flush-frameless look). Each system has structural and aesthetic trade-offs we walk through during the consultation visit.
Not for code in most residential Ontario applications — but a top cap (a slim metal rail along the top of the glass) is sometimes added for grip comfort, structural stiffening on tall guards, or as a design choice. Frameless glass railings without a top cap are increasingly common for view-preserving balconies and lakefront decks across the GTA.
Glass railing installation cost in Ontario depends on linear footage, mounting style, glass thickness, and hardware finish. Use our Build & Price tool for a real-time project range, or book a free in-home measure for an exact quote. A proper quote requires seeing the actual mounting substrate and structural conditions at your site — we do not publish per-linear-foot prices because they vary significantly based on substrate and span.
Yes. Tempered glass with 316 marine-grade stainless hardware is fully rated for exterior Canadian use, including Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles and salt air near Lake Ontario. When laminated glass is specified on request, UV-stable PVB or SentryGlas interlayers do not yellow or delaminate over time. All hardware fasteners are sealed against water ingress. We provide a 5-year warranty on exterior railing installations, identical to our interior warranty.
